About

Welcome to the 10th Expeditionary Unit, a cross-world Heavy RP/Writing Community centered entirety around the Temple Knights. We are not splinter cell factions, we are not beholden to some noble in Shirogane—we are regiments of Temple Knights through and through. Characters that belong to any of the groups making up the Congregation of Our Knights Most Heavenly are welcome (TKs, Friars Templar, Hospitaliers, Knights Dragoon, Temple Knives (chefs), Temple Knight Engineers, etc). Clergy who wish to be attached to the individual Companies are welcome as well.♖ Our characters make up a Classical Ishgardian Community with a focus on characters struggling to adapt to the changes in the aftermath of the Dragonsong War. Be warned that there may be dark themes in our Roleplay, including IC themes of classism, racism, and religious piety. We would like to make it crystal clear that we do not espouse these views OOCly, and in fact condemn them. Writing a villain does not mean the player writing them believes what their character believes. If you have difficulty understanding that empathetic and reasonable people can write characters who hold bad and problematic worldviews, then this community may not be for you.
As such, we keep a very strict IC and OOC divide, and we absolutely do not tolerate OOC bigotry in any of its forms.
If you have those views OOC you are not welcome here.
Only Hyur/Elezen may join the Order proper save for extreme, case-by-case circumstances. This is done to provide as authentic an Ishgardian environment as possible. In addition, only Ishgardian citizens may apply. We are very lore strict, and generally low-power level. We adhere to the lore as best we can, with little to no exception or gray area. And we play the common man, so that means we don't deal with NPC characters (Aymeric, etc), we don't take WoLs, and we don't touch NPC positions (Azure dragoons, House of Lords/Commons, high ranking members of military/clergy, etc).An emphasis on paragraph style RP. One-liners or just dialogue is not our preferred style, though we may do it on occasion. We're interested in novel style writing, where we create a story together.Stay in your FC! We're a CWLS and Discord predominantly. That said, characters that are in existing FCs are not permitted IC binds (contracts, employ, etc) with organizations outside of the Order. If you're looking to be a Temple Knight who is also a bartender and dancer on weekends, this isn't the place for you.We take IC=/=OOC VERY seriously here. Many of our characters are unpleasant, combatative, or have issues that they are not dealing with in a healthy manner. That doesn't mean we as players agree with their behavior, OOCly.
It can be very compelling to see the stories that come out from writing flawed characters, but this also requires a heavy dose of separating the author from the character. If IC=/=OOC is not something that you can separate cleanly, we will politely decline to RP with you. Again, our players are not our characters, and we prefer to RP with those who can make a distinction between the two.
Communication is one of our core values. RP is a collaborative writing experience—and that means at times, people will disagree or a misunderstanding may occur. We are folks who are always willing to talk things out and we expect that too of those wanting to RP with us. Also, we take very seriously OOC consent: your character will never be forced to experience or do something that you, as the player, do not want or find uncomfortable. And lastly, a word of warning—this is not a happy place. Most of our stories are dark, and at times even grim. There's a lot of conflict RP, and many of our characters do not get along IC (though we get along well OOCly!). If you're looking for primarily wholesome RP, you might want to look elsewhere! That said, OOCly we're all pretty friendly people with an emphasis on communication, so if you enjoy playing a character who is flawed and you don't mind getting into IC spats, this might be the place for you!

The 10th Expeditionary Unit

Focusing more on the Ishgardian Culture aspect of the Temple Knights, the 10th is for those who wish to explore the impact of Ishgardian society upon the Order of Our Knights Most Heavenly. How does one join the 10th?
The 10th does not have an application process—rather, we invite you to RP with us for a few RPs, and if both parties seem to click, then we will have your character ICly transferred into the 10th.
To facilitate easier communication, we recommend that you join St. Valeyorant's Forum, down below.
Otherwise, any questions may be directed to liamont on Discord!

FAQ

Here's a comprehensive list of questions we get quite frequently. It will be added to as needed. Check here first before asking us, more than likely your question has already been answered! How does one join the Temple Knights?
As Ishgard's elite force of Knights, who directly serve the Holy See (and formally, the Archbishop), the requirements to become a Temple Knight are much higher than that of a House Knight.
In the lore, there are generally four ways to do so:
1. Winning or distinguishing oneself in a grand tournament
2. Killing a named dragon
3. Being recommended by a prominent House
4. Scouted from the Scholasticate (Healer/Casters)
My character used to be a criminal/pirate/my father was a pirate/etc and is now seeking to atone; can they join?
No. The Temple Knights are not a rehabilitation program, nor are they a charity. They take the best of the best, not random petty criminals who are looking to turn over a new leaf. The House Knights are where one should go for that!
Also, if a criminal background comes up in the IC interview, you can best believe our characters will try to arrest your character. That said, characters can have a shady past—as long as the character keeps their mouth shut about it. And the player must be okay that there will be IC repercussions if it's ever found out, ranging from mild punishment to imprisonment to execution (with the player's consent), depending on severity. My character wants to learn skills but they are an absolute beginner, can they join?
Again, the Temple Knights take the best of the best—if your character has no skills then...as the Captain would say, "Do take yourself over to the House Knights and learn some skills first, hm?"
The Temple Knights are not likely to take your character just because they keep trying to get in but they have nothing to offer beyond persistence. So we'd recommend that your character has at least the bare minimum of skills required to join an elite force like the Temple Knights. This does not mean they need to be insanely skilled, but at the very least be semi-proficient in one weapon or magicks (for the mages) to get your foot in the door.My character is not Ishgardian born, and/or they were raised primarily in [insert city that is not Ishgard here] but they are an Ishgardian citizen now, can I join?
We only take Ishgardian citizens, and as the 10th is a very traditional Ishgardian company, and more than likely any naturalized citizen will be dismissed ICly. And if your character doesn't even have Ishgardian traditional values, it may be better to try for another writing community than that of ours. Again, we're here to play highly traditional, conservative Ishgardians still clinging to the "glorious" past—there's plenty of places where people are playing more open minded characters. We're one of the few to explore the traditional, conservative aspect of Ishgard (and how problematic this kind of mindset can be!), and on this point we'd like to keep our little niche thematically consistent.
To clarify, an Ishgardian who has lived in Ul'dah all his life will not be accepted here. Neither will a Gridanian who became a naturalized Ishgardian citizen.
Only Ishgardians born in Ishgard and with an Ishgardian lineage will be considered.

structure

The following is the general guidelines we use in our Temple Knight communities.A very comprehensive resource to Ishgard lore in general can be found here,
The sections on Temple Knights and House Knights would be best to look over.

Overall Structure

Branches of the Temple Knights include:
-Order of the Knights Dragoon
-Temple Knight Hospitaliers: Healers and the Infirmary
-The Order of the Friars Templar: Holy men and women providing spiritual needs to the Temple Knights
-Temple Knives: Chefs of the Temple Knights

Titles and Address

Knights are referred to as "Ser {Firstname}", as referenced in the in-game lore.
"Ser" and "Sir" are NOT interchangeable.
"Ser" is exclusively for knights.
So "Ser Clement de Faucheux" would be called "Ser Clement", and NOT "Ser Faucheux".A great lore doc on titles and address in Ishgard can be found here, it is recommended to give it a read.

Rank Structure

-
Squire -> Temple Knight -> Knight-Sergeant -> Knight-Lieutenant -> Knight-Captain
-

(Lore note: Only Squire and Temple Knight are specifically mentioned within the lore. There are "Commanders" but it is unclear what their rank is. Guardsmen are mentioned in the lore, but that title seems to denote Knights who are on guard duty.)

For magick users, we generally use the same structure. So a Chirurgeon/Hospitalier or Thaumaturge just starting out might be classified as a Squire, and then a Temple Knight.Chirurgeon/Hospitalier: Medics, doctors and surgeons with an emphasis on healing (with magicks or otherwise).
Field Chirurgeons are deployed into the field.

(Lore note: Chirurgeons are occasionally from the Church or scouted from the Scholasticate by the Temple Knights.
See levequests: Chirurgeon Hand in Glove (L), Scripture Is the Best Medicine (L).)

Friars, Chaplains, and Priests: These roles are standalone and are not part of the rank structure. They are generally sent from the Church to help a unit.
Friar: Holy men and women who take care of the soldiers' spiritual needs.
Chaplain or Priest: A combination of field medic and Friar.

(Lore note: Chaplains appear to be priests who have special healing gifts. See levequests: I Need Your Glove Tonight, Scripture Is the Best Medicine (L).)

Joining the Temple Knights

As Ishgard's elite force of Knights, who directly serve the Holy See (and formally, the Archbishop), the requirements to become a Temple Knight are much higher than that of a House Knight. In the lore, there are generally four ways to do so:
1. Winning or distinguishing oneself in a grand tournament
2. Killing a named dragon
3. Being recommended by a prominent House
4. Scouted from the Scholasticate (Healer/Casters)

IC Standards for entry

(Note: These standards are taken from our interpretation of the lore, and of Knighthood in history. They are not meant to be taken as canon.)

The Temple Knights are the cream of the crop—the most elite soldiers in Ishgard—and our standards reflect that.- Be a Citizen of Ishgard.
Only citizens may be invited into the ranks. The Temple Knights shall not suffer any foreigners attempting to join our ranks.
- Be able-bodied.
A deaf, lame or fully blind individual is not capable to become a Temple Knight. Mayhap try your hand at becoming a Fortemps House Knight.
- Be of High Character and Martial Capacity.
A drunkard shall never be a Knight. A Knight, in turn, shall never be a drunkard. A drink or two is acceptable, yet pray know your limits.
We are Knights. Knights are people of character, and you carry the authority of our country wherever you go. You represent Ishgard, the Lord Commander and far more importantly, the Holy See, with every breath you take. Knights are not sluggards, we are not maniacs, and we are not criminals. Once you become a Temple Knight, you are a Temple Knight for life. This is your chosen Profession. This is your chosen Honor & Burden to take with you to the grave, as there are few things more disgraceful than an Ex-Knight.- The Temple Knights serve Ishgard, The Lord Commander and the Holy See.
We serve none else. We do not follow the orders of civilians—be they Noble or Lowborn. Neither do we serve the Church, though this is a fairy recent change. Nonetheless, this does not mean we may disrespect the Priesthood.

uniforms & Bardings

Your character is expected to wear the Uniform in-game when you're RP'ing being on duty, but feel free to have civilian clothes when you are not. Uniforms are strictly prohibited when off duty, for example, if your character is having a drink at the Forgotten Knight.Sadly, the Temple Knight set is only wearable by Tanks and Dragoons, so we have some alternative outfits for the other classes if you do not have a Tank or Dragoon class unlocked.

Tanks & dragoons

Templar's Set with Cobalt Vambraces dyed Dragoon Blue (or Storm Blue if the other is too expensive).
Shields: Wolf Kite Shield or anything that shares that same model. Sadly the TK NPC shield is unavailable to players.
Sword: Dzemael Winglet (drop from Dzemael Darkhold)
Lances: Iron lance, Steel spear, etc. (under construction)
Axes/Two-handed Swords - (under construction)

Archers

Ishgardian Bowman's Cyclas (drop from Dusk Vigil), Chimerical Felt Cyclas of Aiming (crafted), Halonic Auditor's Cuirass (drop from the Vault).
Helmet: Anything that protects the face/head.

Chirurgeons & Hospitaliers

Adept's Gown (dyed white). See the outfit of Temple Knights Hospitalier Captain Abel Whitecape.

Priests, Chaplains, Friars

Halonic Priest's set (drop in the Vault) or Chimerical Felt of Healing set (crafted)

Thaumaturges

Halonic Exorcist's set (drop from the Vault) or Chimerical Felt Robe of Casting set (crafted).

Machinists & Engineers

Artifact gear for MCH or gear that is worn in Skysteel, dyed blue. The point is to be immediately identifiable as an engineer/machinist.

Temple Knives

Level 70 AF CUL gear, Apron (from Firmament), or Valentione Apron Attire (Mogstation) dyed white.

Off-duty outfits

Anemos Gambison (used in game by TK veterans or off duty Knights, see level 50-60 LTW quests or the three knights by the Orphanage in the Firmament), or you can go with whatever would make sense for your character.

Barding

Ishgardian Half or Full Barding. (Vedrfolnir Devoteth FATE chain.)
Feather Colour is the default yellow, or Soot Black. If your character is a Noble, other colours are accepted.
(Feather colour calculator)
If you have neither of these, the MSQ Ishgardian Chocobo works perfectly fine.
